TENURE-TRACK POSITION
GERONTOLOGY AND FAMILY STUDIES
COLLEGE OF SOCIAL SCIENCES AND INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES
Beginning Fall 2013

The College of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies at Sacramento State houses departments committed to a broad range of disciplines. The College is composed of ten departments, four interdisciplinary programs, ten centers and two institutes.

The announced position is interdisciplinary in nature and in structure, with a joint assignment in both the Gerontology Program and in Family Studies, a concentration in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS). Gerontology has approximately 90 undergraduate majors, while the Family Studies concentration in the FACS department has approximately 60 majors. The Gerontology Program is based on Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics in Higher Education national standards and the Family Studies program is approved by the National Council on Family Relations in the area of Family Life Education.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
• Master’s degree in gerontology and family studies/human development or related field (nursing, social work, sociology, psychology, marriage and family therapy).

Special Knowledge and Skills:
• Ability to communicate and work effectively with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community and to integrate diversity issues in the curriculum
• Evidence of scholarly/creative activities related to Gerontology/Family Studies.
• Strong interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise students in service learning, practicum, fieldwork and/or internships or other adults in community-based organizations.

Experience:
• Experience in applied gerontology
• Experience in curriculum development & teaching adults

Additional Desired Qualifications:

Education:
• Doctorate in Gerontology, Family Studies or related field required for tenure. The doctoral degree must be conferred prior to tenure. Sustained progress toward completion will be assessed annually for retention.

Special Knowledge and Skills:
• Certified Family Life Educator (CFLE)
• Expertise in online course development and implementation
• Active engagement in public policy focusing on aging and family

Experience:
• Teaching experience at the college/university level
• Experience in family support services

Assignment

This is a full-time, academic-year tenure-track interdisciplinary faculty position, assigned to both the Gerontology Program and the Family Studies concentration in Family and Consumer Sciences. A typical teaching load will include a combination of courses (12 WTU per semester) and supervising students in service learning, fieldwork, practicum and internships. The Assignment also includes: engaging in scholarly and creative activities, providing service to departments, university and community and advising and recruiting students. Additional summer teaching is possible depending on demand, but is not required.

Appointment
The interdisciplinary appointment will be in the Gerontology Program/Department of Family and Consumer Sciences in the College of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies. Academic rank as tenure-track assistant or associate professor and salary at hiring will depend upon qualifications and professional experience.
