Position Summary*

Reporting to the Vice President for University Advancement, the Associate Vice President (AVP) for University Development is responsible for planning and implementing San Francisco State's fundraising goals through strategic development, management and solicitation of major donors, corporate and foundation prospects. The incumbent will personally cultivate and solicit major gifts and manage a portfolio of donors and prospects. The AVP will also manage all activities related to the planning, implementation and tracking of multi-year fundraising campaigns and initiatives that support SF State's mission.

Minimum Qualifications*

- Bachelor's degree or the equivalent in experience is required.
- Master's degree preferred.
- A minimum of 10 to 12 years of experience in major gifts or fundraising or a similar background is required; experience in higher education is a plus.
- Prior experience in a leadership or management role.
- Experience in the management of writing and editing persuasive materials including grant proposals, information brochures, and letters.
- Leadership experience in a multi-year comprehensive campaign in higher education strongly preferred.
- Extensive knowledge of the corporate and foundation community.
- Technical knowledge in a variety of fundraising areas; especially planned giving.
- Proven track record in raising major gifts.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Computer literate and knowledge of university development databases/spreadsheets including formulas and functions.
- Function effectively as a member of a team, willingness to participate in activities and assignments that will benefit other members of the team or will contribute to the accomplishment of team objectives.
- The ability to provide strong and innovative leadership in developing and implementing programs.
- Ability to persuade and motivate others, command the respect and attention of SF State leadership and influential volunteers.
-CFRE accreditation is desirable.

License/Certification Required

Must possess a valid Driver's License and comply with the Defensive Drivers Training program requirements if a vehicle is used to travel on official business.


May work on evenings, weekends and holidays to attend events and visits with donors and alumni; Automobile travel required for visits to donors, training and alumni events; occasional air travel.

Pre-Employment Requirements
