Cal Poly Pomona
Campus Overview
Established in 1938, Cal Poly Pomona encompasses the former ranch of cereal magnate
W.K. Kellogg — 1,400 acres of rolling hills located 35 miles east of downtown Los
Angeles. The university's more than 19,800 students benefit from Cal Poly Pomona's
practical "learning by doing" educational philosophy, many nationally
recognized programs and the faculty's commitment to academic excellence. Ranked as one
of the top five regional universities in the West by US News & World Report,
Cal Poly Pomona offers over 60 undergraduate programs, 20 graduate programs and 13
teaching credentials/certificates in eight colleges and schools. The university's
recent partnership with the American Red Cross will bring the nation's largest blood

Donald O. Straney
California State Polytechnic University, Pomona
Dean of science and professor of biology
Donald Straney is a member of the board of directors of the Desert Studies Center and
the Ocean Studies Institute of the CSU system. He also is on the steering committee of
the Knight Collaborative, a national consortium of colleges and universities that
provides executive education programs, best practice consultation and information
sharing for college and university leaders. Straney also serves on CORE 21, a business
development organization in Southern California.
Straney was a 1994-1995 ACE Fellow. An evolutionary biologist, Straney has studied
patterns of change in a variety of organisms, most recently focusing on ants. He
previously was a professor of zoology and assistant to the provost for faculty
development at Michigan State University. Straney received his B.S. and M.S. from
Michigan State University and a Ph.D. in zoology from the University of California,
Berkeley.
