California Maritime Academy
Campus Overview
Founded in 1929, the California Maritime Academy prepares students for careers in
business, engineering, technology marine transportation and global studies. Cal
Maritime is one of only seven degree-granting maritime academies in the U.S., and the
only one on the West Coast. Located on the waterfront in Vallejo, 30 miles northeast of
San Francisco, the campus includes the 500-foot training ship, Golden Bear, which
serves as a floating laboratory. Known for its direct, hands-on approach, Cal Maritime
provide its more than 600 students with a 14:1 student-to-teacher ratio and a quality
educational experience that combines intellectual learning, applied technology,
leadership development and global awareness. The university is the only CSU campus
whose students enjoy 100-percent placement upon graduation.

Al McLemore
California Maritime Academy
Professor, Engineering Technology
A Cal Maritime alumnus from the Class of 1971, Al McLemore, who has been
a faculty member at Cal Maritime for 27 years, has participated on so many
training cruises that he has spent a total of more than four years at sea
on the Training Ship GOLDEN BEAR.
With 25 training cruises under his belt, he is one of the few who have
earned the distinction of sailing on three of Cal Maritime's four training
ships. He obtained a second B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and Material
Science from U.C. Davis and his M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering
from CSU Sacramento. McLemore currently serves as department chair in
the Engineering Technology department and is a member of the San Francisco
Society of Port Engineers. He plans to take a semester sabbatical next
year, when he will participate in a faculty exchange with the maritime
academy in Mexico.
